Java Keytool Key Database | Oracle Corporation | Database Files |
The KEYSTORE (Java Keytool Key Database) file extension is used by the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to store user security certificates generated with the Keytool utility. This program is required to create self-signed certificates, servers, or clients for secure communication and encrypt/decrypt sensitive data. Thus, with this file format, users are able to gain access to such digital certificate information like their private or public keys. It must be noticed that these certificates are imported and managed in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Such file is a keystore type of file, which works similarly to a physical safe or a repository, where your certificates can be archived and stored securely.
Structure of KEYSTORE File Format
KEYSTORE files store user keys and associated certificates used for updating online transactions in an encryption form. The structure of KEYSTORE files requires basic parameters information like the certificate type, geographic and organizational region, name domain, and private key data. They also use algorithms to encrypt key data like DES, AES, and BLOWFISH. In order to create a valid keystore, the data must be signed by an X 509 compliant digital signature.
Similar File Formats
Other similar formats which provide technology users with similar encryption services include the .KEY, .P12, .PFX, and .PEM formats. However, unlike KEYSTORE, they store less data in comparison, and require additional applications for aid with generating certificates.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .KEYSTORE) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .KEYSTORE extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .KEYSTORE file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .KEYSTORE extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .KEYSTORE extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .KEYSTORE file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .KEYSTORE file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .KEYSTORE file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .KEYSTORE file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .KEYSTORE file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
