The .PEM file extension is associated with the Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) format. It was developed jointly by the International Telephone and Telegraph Consortium (ITU-T) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The PEM format is a secure method of electronically transmitting information which uses a combination of public-key encryption, authentication, integrity protection, and digital certificates to provide automated email verification.
Security Features
The PEM format can be used to encrypt data for transmission over the internet by providing data origin authentication, integrity protection, and content security. With PEM, a digital certificate is issued by a certificate authority, such as Verisign, to authenticate email messages and validate the sender's identity. The private key associated with the certificate is used to encrypt the data prior to transmission, while the public key is used to decrypt it upon receipt. When an email message is encrypted with PEM, the recipient will need access to both the private key and the public key in order to view the contents. Additionally, PEM also provides authentication via digital signature support.
Similar Extensions
Similar file extensions include .CER, .CRT, .DER, .KEY, .P7B, and .PFX, all of which are related to different types of digital certificates issued by various types of secure messaging systems such as Microsoft Outlook or ProtonMail.
Software Support
The PEM format is supported by both Windows and MacOS operating systems as well as popular email client programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Apple Mail. Additionally, many online services use the format for secure email transmission such as Yahoo and Google Mail.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PEM) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PEM extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PEM file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PEM extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PEM extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PEM file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PEM file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PEM file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PEM file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PEM file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
