JPEG XR Image | Microsoft | Raster Image Files |
The JXR (JPEG XR Image) file extension is a bitmap image format developed by Microsoft for use in its Windows platform. The format allows for enhanced compression, improved graphics capabilities, and wider range of support than the conventional JPEG format. It also supports both lossy and lossless compression with support for an extended range of color formats, higher resolutions, and better alpha channel support. JXR image files are easily recognizable by the.jxr or.hdp file extension at the end of the file name.
Compression Features
JXR image files offer both lossy and lossless compression algorithms. Lossy compression, compared to lossless compression, reduces file size by discarding some data in exchange for smaller file size. The purpose of lossy compression is to significantly reduce file size so that images can be transferred faster over networks or stored on these lossy compressed formats without occupying too much space. Comparing JXR to traditional JPEG files, the latter only offers one form of compression whereas the former offers support for both lossy and lossless compression modes.
Integrated Alpha Channel Support
It can incorporate an additional alpha channel into its formats which enables users to manipulate elements with transparency on images. This feature adds on layered capabilities to graphics development because it allows users to manipulate areas within images without interference from surrounding pixels. This feature also creates smoother transitions between sections of an image when resizing or further editing within specific sections of it.
Similar File Extensions
Other similar image file types which can convert or open JXR files include: .PNG, .BMP, .TIFF, .GIF, and .JP2.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .JXR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .JXR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .JXR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .JXR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .JXR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .JXR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .JXR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .JXR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .JXR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .JXR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
