The .JNLP file extension is a Java Network Launch Protocol file, used to initiate and manage the download and execution of Java applications over a wide area network. Developed by Oracle Corporation, JNLP was released in 2001 as part of the Java Web Start technology for deployment of rich applications over the web. It works by creating a session connection between a client and remote server, allowing files to be downloaded to the client computer, then executed by the installed Java Virtual Machine (JVM) locally.
Typically, JNLP files contain a link to the application to be downloaded, details on how it should be executed by the JVM (such as what libraries or environment variables should be used) as well as any additional details needed to start the application. The protocol also supports caching of applications so that a user may launch them quickly without having to download them each time.
