The ICON .ico file extension is a type of image file used to store icon graphics. Being a raster image file format, the ICON files contain images in either monochrome, 16-color, 256-color or True Color mode. As the name implies, these files are generally used to represent icons or tiny images which can be used for a number of purposes such as shortcut icons, program icons, website’s favicon etc. All Windows operating systems since Windows 1.0 support the .ico format though support for other platforms such as Mac OS X and Unix operating systems are limited.
Creation of ICON Files
The ICON file format heavily uses compression and usually contains one or more small images at multiple resolutions and sizes for different uses. The popular image editors like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc allow users to create and save.ico files from their existing images. Axialis IconWorkshop, a tool specifically designed to create.ico files is also another popular choice among developers for creating small icon graphics. Files with the .ico extension can also be created by saving an existing image in icon format with other standard image editors like GIMP.
Other Similar File Extensions
Although the ICON file type is highly used for tiny icon graphics yet many other popular formats are also used which include .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .png, etc. In order to convert an image from one format to another, an image converter tool like Fm SVG Converter, etc, can be used.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .ICON) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .ICON extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .ICON file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .ICON extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .ICON extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .ICON file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .ICON file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .ICON file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .ICON file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .ICON file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
