The PAR (Parchive Index File) file extension is used by a variety of applications and programs, ranging from multimedia and scientific applications to office and productivity programs. The files with the PAR extension mainly contain index information related to an archived file and with help of associated compression software can be used to verify and reconstruct the content of compressed files. For example, when an archive is created with 7-Zip, the associated first-level PAR file is also created for every byte-range of the compressed data. This PAR file contains parity information that allows for verifying the content of the archive.
The PAR extension can refer to two types of files: those associated with multimedia applications such as Kodi, as well as BluRay Creator, HAP Lossless Codec, Videomizer 2 and others; and those associated with security software such as GPG Suite, Secure IT, WinMagic. Just like its associated media or security application files, PAR files may often appear with other extensions, such as P01, PAR2, SFV, CHK, MD5, MDF, PFI, GPG Sanity Checker and others.
Structure
PAR files contain both metadata related to the content of long data objects (LDFs) within the archive such as checksums of data buffers or CRCs as well as different recovery instructions. Typically, each long data object is protected with redundant parity bits which allows for recreating any missing or damaged pieces. These pieces are usually stored in several blocks (called ‘recovery slice’) containing enough data to recreate a given piece of data but constitute only a fraction of the whole data set.
Similar File Extensions
Common related file extensions include P001, P003, PF1, PF2, P01 2SFV, PSV and SFVC.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PAR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PAR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PAR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PAR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PAR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PAR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PAR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PAR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PAR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PAR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
