The HGT file extension is the acronym for Height Above Geoid Terrain. These are digital elevation model files (DEMs) which are generated and used by many different applications. The HGT is the standard format for storing relief information data in a raster format. It consists of a large three-dimensional array of floating-point numbers, representing elevations above sea level on a square grid usually of 30 arc-seconds resolution. The grid is stored in binary raster format in a space-based file structure, with the individual elevation points calculated using the state plane coordinate system.
What is HGT?
HGT stands for Height Above Geoid Terrain and is an in-depth 3D model file containing elevation data for a given region. This type of file is used by many software programs, such as ArcGIS Pro, Grass GIS, Surfer, and Global Mapper. These types of DEMs are useful for contour line mapping, calculating terrain shade maps, and performing hydrological analysis.

The common file extension associated with HGT files is .HGT, but there are also similar files extensions available, such as:
How to Open HGT Files?
The two main ways to open HGT files are through a GIS or imaging software program. These types of programs are designed to view, edit, create, and analyze large amounts of digital elevation data. Some of these programs include MapInfo Professional, ESRI ArcGIS, and Apple's Mac OS X GIS Mapping Kit.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .HGT) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .HGT extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .HGT file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .HGT extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .HGT extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .HGT file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .HGT file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .HGT file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .HGT file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .HGT file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
