Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language Format | Hewlett-Packard | Vector Image Files |
The HGL file extension is associated with .hgl, which is a vector graphics language created by Hewlett Packard. This vector language can be seen as an extension of the .hp and hpe formats. It offers a range of features not available in those two formats. At the same time, it offers backward compatibility on some aspects between all three.
Vector Graphics Language
HGL stands for Hewlett Packard Graphics Language. It was created in the mid 80s to allow users to create complex graphic file using the HP plotter printers. The.hgl format is considered as a descendant of the .hpgl, and its main purpose is its basic feature set which includes vector drawing commands, geometric functions for scaling, allocating, and rotating vectors, and line types.
The.ho command in an HGL file is used to create arcs with a specific radius and can also be used to draw circles and ellipses. Their shapes are customizable using line type commands and the set color commands. Additionally, wm and handle commands can be used to draw lines with the provided coordinates, making them more versatile and allowing for more complex vector shapes. Similar file extensions are: .hpgl, .hp2, .hpr, and hp2w
Compatibility Across Formats
The HP Graphics Language file format is compatible with other formats like HP/GL, HP/GL-2, HP/RTL (Real Time Language), PCL3GUI, and PCL4/XL formats. It can also handle other technologies such as pen attributes, ellipse paths, paint polygon areas, picture images stored in bitmap format, freehand curves (Bezier curves), font mapping from software typeface names to GDI Emulated font structures.
Moreover, HGL may support printer attributes such as dot plot mode drawings, blanking attributes such as clipped paths, anti-noise forms, and darken mode settings; identifying attributes like color depth information stored in PCL6 or other information as stored in HPGL2 (or even older) format. Even though HGL has backward compatibility with these formats, it develops on them and extends into enhanced features such as vector patterns filled with enhanced line styles.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .HGL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .HGL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .HGL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .HGL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .HGL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .HGL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .HGL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .HGL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .HGL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .HGL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
