The FRF file extension stands for Free Report Form. It is a binary file created by Microsoft Excel in order to store various data used in cell formatting, formulas and text content. FRF files are typically found in older versions of Excel, such as 97-2003. They may also be used by some other software applications.
File Format
A FRF file is a binary based worksheet that stores a number of key data points, such as Print Setup Details, Font Information, Cell Display Properties, Cell Sorting Parameters, Outline View information and Formula Instructions. Additionally, it contains a grid of cells which designate the contents of the associated spreadsheet. This information is not directly visible when the worksheet is opened, however they become activated as you interact withcertain elements of the spreadsheet.
Similar File Types
Some other spreadsheet file types with similar functionality include XLSX, XLSM, XLTM, ODS, OTS, and CSV. These formats are more commonly used and typically have more versatility than the FRF format.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .FRF) with the new application.
