FB2 ( FB2) is an open XML-based e-book format, defined by the Collective Development of Western Electronic Literature (CDWEL). It was designed as a cross-platform alternative to other popular e-book formats such as CHM, PDB, and EPUB. FB2 is a relatively simple, open, well-documented format that allows authors and publishers to create platform- and device-independent electronic documents. The FB2 format is fully supported by the Russian FictionBook ( FictionBook) software and can be read by a wide range of Adobe Reader derivatives and other applications such as Calibre, KindleGen, Sigil, and Sumatra PDF.
Technical Details
FB2 makes use of the XML markup language and requires software capable of understanding its tags to properly interpret the data in the file. The FB2 document also includes a small set of basic formatting instructions for displaying the text in e-book readers, including rules for font size, spacing, indentation, italicization and bolding. FB2 documents have a number of features that distinguish them from other file formats. Headers that include basic information such as title, author, publisher, ISBN, date of publication are available within the FB2 document to make it easier to identify and cite within the industry. Headers also store information about the book's language and other metadata. Additionally, FB2 files also contain support for interactive elements such as hyperlinks and illustrations.
