Enhanced Windows Metafile Picture | Microsoft | Vector Image Files |
EMF ( .emf) is a vector image file format created by Microsoft Windows for use with device-independent graphics files. The Enhanced Metafile Format goes beyond the .wmf Windows Metafile Format in that it provides additional support for managing metafiles and defining their contents.
An Enhanced Windows Metafile ( .emf) is a vector image file containing an object-based metafile. It contains 2D graphics commands indicating how to draw or manipulate graphically objects and lines. Some adjustable parameters, such as the pen width, which can vary from device to device, are stored in an associated metafile descriptors.
Size & Compatibility
EMF files are very small compared to raster images, making them highly efficient for file storage. However, they have limited compatibility since they are usually incompatible with certain printers and other bitmap devices, as well as other operating systems. The majority of EMF files can be supported by a wide range of programs.
Similar file extensions include: .psd, .xaml, .ai, .eps, .pdf.
Rendering System
EMF's all employ a specific rendering system developed by Microsoft Windows. This means that they must be rendered properly in order to display correctly. In some cases, the operating environment may not be capable of fully interpreting the data contained in EMF files; hence incorrect display may result.
To make sure that the EMF file is rendered properly, all compatible applications must adhere to a particular set of rules for handling data operations involving the graphics elements.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .EMF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .EMF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .EMF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .EMF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .EMF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .EMF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .EMF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .EMF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .EMF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .EMF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
