The .DV file type is a Digital Video file. It is a container file format created by DV cameras, used in professional video production of films and television programs. The standard in which these files are recorded is known as "DV" and is often referred to as the "DV Format". This format was one of the earliest digital video formats to gain acceptance in both the consumer and professional markets.
File Format Specifications
The .DV file format is based on the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) specification developed by Microsoft, with a similar physical structure and metadata protocol to the AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) and MPG (Motion Picture Masters Group) formats. It uses compression technology based on MPEG-2 video and data rates ranging from 1-15 mb/s, with the maximum size allowed for an individual DV file being 4 GB. In addition, .DV files feature audio samples in 48 kHz 12-bit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) format; use UDF (Universal Disc Format) to encode audiovisual data; are encoded using intra-frame coding; and can store up to four contiguous video frames in a single macroblock.
Similar File Extensions
Other similar file extensions include .AVI, .MPG, .MPEG, .MOV (used primarily with Apple's QuickTime software), .WMV, as well as many others.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DV) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DV extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DV file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DV extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DV extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DV file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DV file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DV file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DV file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DV file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
