Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Recorded Television Format | Microsoft | Video Files |
The DVR-MS file extension is used for digital video recordings in Microsoft Windows. It was introduced with the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition(MCE) operating system and is a proprietary Windows-only media file format that contains audio, video and SML files.
Compatibility and File Contents
The DVR-MS format is based on MPEG-2, although other codecs may be used. These kinds of files are typically created with the MCE operating system but this format is also supported by some nonlinear editors with a plugin. The file is comprised of metadata in the form of SML (Simple Media Language) that contains data such as title, author, duration, and other information about the source material. In addition, DVR-MS files may also contain closed captioning information. This format can be opened using Microsoft Windows Media Player, CyberLink PowerDVD, CyberLink PowerProducer, and some nonlinear editors, such as Sony Vegas Pro.
Similar Formats and Conversion
DVR-MS files are similar to other video container formats like .MP4, .ASF, .AVI, and .MOV. It is worth noting that these formats are not compatible with each other and thus may require conversion before being used with other media players or devices. Several free online tools exist that allow users to quickly convert their DVR-MS files into one of these formats, or alternately, users can use dedicated software such as QuickTime Pro 2.0.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DVR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DVR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DVR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DVR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DVR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DVR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DVR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DVR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DVR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DVR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
