The DTS file extension is a type of encoded audio file used by various digital audio playback technology to store and transport audio content. It was originally developed by Digital Theater System (DTS) in the 1990s. The technology was later acquired by Xperi Corporation, a media technology company, and the audio standards for these files were established by DTS Inc., a subsidiary of Xperi.
DTS files contain audio data that is compressed using one of three different compression algorithms: DTS Audio, Master Audio, or Neo:6 Multi-channel. Depending on the type of DTS file, it can store one or more audio channels, along with metadata, such as track information and other details about how the audio should be played back. The metadata is stored and managed within the file itself, making DTS files highly flexible and capable of being used across a variety of different device types and systems.
Compatibility and Security
DTS files are most commonly used for high-definition video and audio discs such as Blu-ray discs. It is also compatible with other devices such as computers, televisions, DVD players, streaming services, digital home theater receivers, HDTV's, surround sound systems, and even gaming consoles. When playing back a DTS file in any type of application, it is encrypted and protected from unauthorized access or copying with digital rights management (DRM) technologies.
Similar File Extensions
DTS files are similar to other encoded audio files such as WAV, AAC, or FLAC.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DTS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DTS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DTS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DTS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DTS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DTS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DTS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DTS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DTS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DTS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
