Gerber Drill Rack Format | N/A | Data Files |
The DRL file extension stands for ’Gerber Drill Rack’, and is a file type used to store information about drill cycles for the purpose of automatic drilling and routing. This type of file is usually created using either PCB designing software or dedicated CAM (Computer-aided Manufacturing) software. In general, the contents of a DRL file provide instructions to a drilling machine about the size and depth of each drill cycle, as well as the speed and acceleration of the spindle motor.
Since this format was created by Gerber Systems Corporation, it is usually only used with Gerber drill machines, although some other software packages can also open, create and modify these files. These include AutoDesk’s EAGLE, ImageCraft’s ICCV8, Visual CAD/CAM’s VisualCAD/CAM and other similar programs. Some similar file extensions include NCD, PTH and CNC.
Drill data within DRL files
The information stored in DRL files includes the data required to feed and control the movement of a drill bit during the drill cycle, such as the partial hole depth, exit direction, full hole depth, drill entry angle and the tool break length. There is also supplementary information that guides how the data should be used by manufacturers that use various drilling and manufacturing techniques. This information consists of mechanical parameters, such as spindle acceleration and speed limits, dwell time before drilling begins, formatting codes for metric or imperial measurements and manual position settings.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .DRL) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .DRL extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .DRL file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .DRL extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .DRL extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .DRL file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .DRL file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .DRL file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .DRL file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .DRL file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
