A .COB file is a COBOL source code file. This programming language was developed in 1959, making it one of the oldest high level languages still in use today. The COBOL language is commonly used in business, finance, and administrative applications such as payroll management and record keeping. It is most often used on mainframes or midrange computers running an IBM OS/390, z/OS, Unisys OS 1100, or OpenVMS operating system.
Structure of COB File
A COBOL file consists of four components: the Environment division; the Identification division; the Data division; and the Procedure division. The Environment division defines communication settings between the program and its environment, such as input/output specifications. The Identification division contains the name of the file and its author. The Data division contains data definitions for variables used within the program. Finally, the Procedure division includes one or more sections in which instructions are coded to manipulate data and control program flow.
Compatibility
COBOL files are typically associated with Micro Focus Cobol, Visual Cobol, and Vax Cobol compilation tools. They may be converted to other programming languages such as Java or C# via import or EXE formats, but this can be an involved process with mixed results. Other programming languages uses similar source code file format end with extensions like .CPY, .CBL, and .OBJ.
Programs for WINDOWS system

Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .COB) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .COB extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .COB file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .COB extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .COB extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .COB file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .COB file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .COB file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .COB file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .COB file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
