The .CLS file extension is used for LaTeX Document Class files. Designed by Leslie Lamport for the LaTeX typesetting system, LaTeX Document Class files are ASCII text files that set the overall structure of a document. In contrast to other file types, such as .TEX, which contain the actual text and formatting instructions, the CLS files contain control commands that define the document’s overall layout, including page size and orientation, margins, document fonts and styles.
Document Classes
The LaTeX typesetting system allows users to create documents using a variety of classes, allowing them to quickly produce standard documents like letters and reports. All of the information about the document, including margins, page size, font size and type, and other details are stored in the CLS file. LaTeX provides a number of standard document classes such as article, report, and book, as well as user-defined classes that allow customizations of common documents. Also similar to .STY, .BCP, LTY, .DLX, and VDX.
Using CLS Files
There is no specific program needed to open CLS files, as they are read directly by the LaTeX compiler. To use a CLS file in a LaTeX document, specify the class file name in the documentclass command in the first line of the document; for example: documentclass{homework} assigns the LaTeX Document Class file homework.cls to the document. Afterward you can type your text in plain text and then add formatting with LaTeX commands.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CLS) with the new application.
