CorelDRAW Vector Or Bitmap Format | Corel | Vector Image Files |
The CDR file extension is the native file format of CorelDraw graphic design software. This vector graphic format is used to create and save bitmap and vector images. It is also used by Corel WordPerfect Suite, for vector graphic artwork and template files. It contains vector image data and raster image data combined together in a single layer, which allows users to edit the graphics within the program. The original versions of CDR files were developed by Corel Corporation many years before Adobe Illustrator or FreeHand. CorelDraw was released in 1989 with its corresponding CDR file extension.
Technical Specifications
The file format has evolved through the years, becoming version 6.0 with the introduction of CorelDraw 5. Currently, the file format is on version X7 (version 17) with CorelDraw 2017. It is a proprietary vector image format which can only be read and edited through Corel Draw Graphics Suite or a handful of other programs. These programs include .XAR, .FIG,, .CGM, .SK1, .XBL, and .CMX and operates by storing paths along with object and color information. The file format can contain up to 255 color sections, supports blends, transparency effects, embedding of raster images, text frame support, saving as Pantone colors, and other extended features.
Similar File Types
CDR files are similar to several other graphics packages, such as: Adobe Illustrator Artwork (AI), Adobe Photoshop Document (PSD), AutoCad Drawing (DWG), Portable Document Format (PDF), Microsoft Windows Metafile (WMF) and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS). Additionally, other formats under CorelDraw Suite may also open or convert the CDR files; Vector graphics converter/exporter ( .SVG, .PDF, .WMF) and Image converter/exporter ( .JPG, .PNG, .GIF).

Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .CDR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .CDR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .CDR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .CDR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .CDR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .CDR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .CDR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .CDR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .CDR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .CDR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
