Blizzard Game Texture Format | Blizzard Entertainment | Game Files |
The BLP (Blizzard Texture File) file extension is a texture image format used by Blizzard Entertainment, particularly within their popular video games. It is often found in the game data folders for World of Warcraft, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and many other Blizzard Entertainment titles. BLP is unique in that it stores compressed textures in four separate image formats: JPEG, JPEG2000, S3 Texture Compression (S3TC), and Paletted.
Texture Compression Formats
BLP files are capable of compressing images into a fraction of their original size without much loss in visual quality. This makes them ideal for storing textures in games where size and speed are critical. The compression strategies utilized by the BLP format include JPEG, JPEG2000, S3TC, and Paletted.
JPEG is the most widely-known form of texture compression, as a standard format for photographs and digital images. JPEG2000 is different from traditional JPEG compression in that it has improved compression rates for complex images with many details, such as facial features. S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) is a high-performance hardware-accelerated texture-compression algorithm developed by nVidia. And Paletted encoding reduces memory requirements by using a limited color palette. All together, these techniques allow BLP files to reach an impressive level of compression that is still viewable at higher resolutions while also being small enough to be displayed efficiently.
Similar File Types
Other file types related to BLP includes .tga, .dds, gltf, glsl, and .psd. All these formats are typically used to store digital graphics in various image formats.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .BLP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .BLP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .BLP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .BLP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .BLP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .BLP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .BLP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .BLP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .BLP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .BLP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
