BBB (or .BBB) is the file format type used by BlackBerry after 2012 for backing up device data. It is a compressed archive that contains personal information such as calendar entries and contact information, as well as data related to applications that are installed on the BlackBerry. The data contained in the archive is encrypted which makes it more secure. The earlier back up formats used by BlackBerry devices such as IPD (or .IPD) and BBB (or .BBB) are no longer supported.
Technical Details
The BBB file format is a binary container format compression algorithm which utilizes Deflate, RLE and Huffman coding algorithms. It's header comprises of Item Count, Version and Compressed Size followed by item array containing descriptions of the items present in the archive. Each item comprises of File ID, Length, Position, Content Type and Description respectively. The File IDs in the header are used to locate data while restoring the backup. BBB files can be created and decoded using tools such as BlackBerry Desktop Manager ( BlackBerry DM) or BlackBerry Backup Extractor ( BBE).
