AP (also known as .AP) is a file extension associated with system files which are used by the Symbian OS operating system developed by Nokia Corporation. AP stands for "Active Page" and it is a type of data library used by multiple programs of the Symbian OS. There are two major types of AP files - active page libraries and application modules. Active page libraries contain graphics, animation, and audio data while application modules store program code.
Structure of file extensions
AP files are stored in plain text format and contain program instructions, multiple sections and 3 types of classes - class definitions, class instances and class member variables. Class definitions contain information about supported functions while class instances provide initialization data for files. Instances of the same type can be nested or shared in order to create a library within the active page. Finally, class member variables contain meta-data information about each object. AP files are also related to other Symbian file extensions like .APP, .RSC, .SIS, AGG-SIS-LIB, and .KEY, among others.
Using AP file extension
AP files are mostly used within the Symbian OS interface where they work as an essential part of the operating system. They are typically used for unstructured graphics data like fonts, images or audio clips and their content might vary depending on the program that uses them. Once an AP file is installed in its system directory, users can't modify its content since it has been compiled into an EXE (executable) file. For this reason, third party applications are usually needed in order to view and modify raw AP file content.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .AP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .AP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .AP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .AP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .AP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .AP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .AP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .AP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .AP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .AP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
