AFP (or AFP) is a proprietary file format used for FileProtector Encrypted Files. Developed by WinMagic Inc., it is mainly used to secure confidential files and their corresponding metadata. It is an encrypted archive format, derived from the AES-256 symmetric-key encryption system, making it impossible to access the files without knowing the password.
When a file in any other format is converted to AFP, it typically compresses the file - usually resulting in smaller than the original size. In order to view or access the content of an AFP file, it needs to be opened with WinMagic’s FileProtector software or decrypter application such as FileFixer. Other AFP encryption software by various vendors can also be used to open, view and edit the content in this format.
Similar File Extensions
Apart from WinMagic's FileProtector software, other encryption applications may also use AFP. This includes EncryptEasy by BSI Security, NewSign's EACS and CryptArchiver by Secure It Easy. Certain open source encryption libraries such as OpenPGP and GPG may also use similar file extensions such as GPG, PGP, and GPGE.
