The PGP .PGP file extension is part of the legacy Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) file encryption suite from Symantec Corporation and its predecessor Network Associates. This file encryption algorithm is widely used for user-to-user security and is also most often used for corporate emails. It utilizes public-private key authentication with electronic signatures for secure and authenticated transfers. Additionally, the PGP file encryption algorithm uses an encrypted keyring system to securely store user keys offline. This enables users to securely share information with each other without having to contact anyone else to authenticate the exchange.
Functionality
The PGP file encryption algorithm can be used to protect any kind of file. When a PGP file is created, the plaintext is encrypted using a symmetric cipher typically in one of the two standard cipher types: Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) or Electronic Code Book (ECB). A unique symmetric key is then calculated and stored with the encrypted file. This enables the recipient to decrypt the message by entering the symmetric key and verifying that the correct key has been received. Other file extensions commonly associated with PGP encryption include .STA, .SDA, .PGX and .KPR.
Security Properties
PGP's security properties depend on the strength of the encryption algorithm used, rather than just on secrecy. If an attacker gains access to a given data set using brute force, he/she would need far more computational time to gain full access than if he/she had access to an unencrypted version of the same data set. Additionally, PGP allows users to create digital signatures with their public keys so that messages they receive are verified as coming from them. Furthermore, the encrypted message can be self-decrypted by the sender to ensure that it arrives securely.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PGP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PGP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PGP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PGP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PGP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PGP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PGP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PGP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PGP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PGP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
