3GPP Multimedia File ( .3gp) is a file format developed by the Third Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) for multimedia content used with 3G mobile phones and other compatible devices. It is based on the MPEG-4 standard for audio and video, and is designed to store such types of audio, video, and other types of data, such as subtitles and images. It supports various audio channels, such as mono, stereo, 5.1channel, and so on. Video streams can be encoded with several different codecs, such as H.263, MPEG-4 SP/H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Video frames are coded in either quarter-common intermediate format (QCIF) or full-common intermediate format (CIF). In addition, 3GP files may support seven types of media streams: video stream, audio stream, text stream, timed text stream, 3D object stream, scene description stream, and composite stream.
Uses of 3GP Files
3GP files are used by many mobile phones to play video clips, including Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Pocket PC devices, smartphones such as Android devices and Palm webOS devices. They are often used for streaming services since they are supported by Adobe Media Server and can be viewed on HTML5 websites running on any HTML5 web browsers. The files can also be played using many media player programs such as MS Windows Media Player, VLC Player, or MPlayer. These types of files are also associated with several other extensions such as .3g2, .3gp2, .3gpp, .3p2, and .mp4.
