What is AB1 file?
The .AB1 file extension is used for DNA electropherograms. This type of file is created with the Sequencing Analysis Software Bio-Rad, and contains DNA "reads" or sequences from automated sequencers that are used by labs specializing in genetic bio-informatics. The data stored in the .AB1 file includes dye concentration, peak information, sample data, and the actual sequence data. The file is text based and can be opened using a text editor like WordPad. What is FASTA file?
The .FASTA file extension is commonly used by various bioinformatics applications and programs to store text-based information related to biological sequences. It stands for FASTA Sequence File and contains sequence data for either a protein or DNA stored in a plain-text format. This file type is also widely referred to as a FASTA format document. How to convert the file from AB1 to FASTA?
To successfully convert the AB1 file to FASTA, you should install one of the applications from the list. After installing the software, open the program and select the file you want to convert (file-name.AB1). The next step is to select the target format from the list, in this case FASTA (usually converters allow you to convert to several different formats, so check out their features - maybe one of the available formats will suit you more than FASTA).
What is a file conversion?
A data conversion is normally an automated process to some extent. The effect of the operation of one program is automatically the input product of another application. If that does not happen we need to help the process a little bit and convert the file on our own, e.g. AB1 to FASTA. To obtain a matched structure of the data, it is necessary to use an appropriate converter.
Program for converting AB1 files to FASTA files is a kind of a "binary code translator" compensating for the differences in the code or translating it in such a way so that another application could use it. For us, as users, the visible change will be only another file extension. (After converting the file, it will be the extension FASTA, while before this step we had the AB1 file). For the programs, the difference is on a much higher level – either the application will be able to open a new FASTA file, or not.
