XWD file extension is used by X Window System, commonly known as X11. This type of image is often used for a Screenshot and is taken of what is currently being displayed in the X window system. The best way to view an XWD file is with ImageMagick, an open source image manipulation program. XWD files use the lossless RLE (Run Length Encoding) algorithm for compressing RGB (Red, Green, Blue) values. XWD files can also contain a comment field in their header section.
