XLIFF Localization Format | OASIS | Data Files |
The XLIFF (eXtensible Localization Interchange File Format) file extension is a widely used, XML-based language for data exchange in the localization industry. The format was developed through a collaboration of software industry giants such as Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Apple, as well as localization solution providers, in order to create an open and easy-to-use markup language for localization jobs. With its interoperability and industry-wide adoption, the file format is now commonly used to store information about software localization, such as languages, text strings, and data elements.
In practice, XLIFF can store source text strings in the context of their associated programs. Commonly in the form of .xlf, .xliff or .xml files, XLIFF is frequently used alongside other localization file formats such as PO ( .po) and XTM ( .xtm) to define all localization tasks or product versions, including different settings for each document and different locales for each language. XLIFF is also often used together with CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools that can speed up translations and store them into a single XLIFF file.
Advantages of XLIFF File Format
Given its wide compatibility and acceptance by the industry, the use of the XLIFF format can result in cost savings from streamlining workflows and reducing external translation costs. For software companies, the localizability of their products can be managed in one single place, making localization easier to manage and resulting in a better end product that can reach more markets. Additionally, XLIFF simplifies multilingual localization projects thanks to its support for multiple languages.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .XLIFF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .XLIFF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .XLIFF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .XLIFF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .XLIFF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .XLIFF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .XLIFF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .XLIFF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .XLIFF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .XLIFF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
