The XHT (XHTML File) file extension is used for web documents written in XML, a markup language developed by the World Wide Web Consortium that is an extension of HTML. It is more strict than HTML but provides a flexible and extensible structure that offers greater control over the page design and layout. An XHT file often contains graphics, text, videos and other multimedia objects, as well as supporting scripts which empower added functionality. The XHT file must be saved with the proper file association for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and other web browsers to properly interpret it.
Formatting Standards
XHTML is HTML reformatted into XML, which adheres to numerous formatting rules and standards. This specifically requires any given tag to be properly closed, attributes to be in quotation marks, and nesting of elements done in a precise manner. In order to be compatible with many web browsers, an XHT file must be minimized and all surrounding whitespaces removed prior to distribution. Otherwise, the page may not render correctly.
