The WSP file extension is used for SharePoint Solution Packages, a file format used by Microsoft SharePoint. WSP files are used to store customizations, like created resources such as Web Parts, Site Definitions and compiled code by users. This allows these customizations to be installed to SharePoint sites as part of overall solutions. The file packages contain text-based XML and other files encapsulated in zip archives.
Compatibility
WSP files can only be opened using Microsoft's SharePoint Server or SharePoint Designer, although they may be able to be opened on any platform that the application has compatible versions on. There are other similar file extensions such as.SPPKG and.APPX which serve similar purposes.
