The WDF file extension is an acronym for Workshare Compare DeltaFile. This proprietary file format is used exclusively with the Workshare Compare/Compare Plus (formerly Compare+) software application, and allows users to compare two versions of a document and view the differences between them. It is a compressed archive file, containing a collection of delta elements - i.e. additions, substractions or assignments- that are used to detect the changes between versions of a document. The WDF file can be much smaller than its corresponding original document, as it contains only data which has deviated from one version to the other.
Purpose and Benefits of WDF Files
The main purpose of a WDF file is to store differences between two versions of a document in order to detect changes in the edited or revised document. This makes it easier for users to identify which parts of the text have been edited or added, since they can carry out quick and effective comparisons both within and between documents. In addition, this format takes up much less space than the source format of the document; also making transfer of files via email or other means faster and more efficient.
