A UML (Unified Modelling Language) Data Object Model, .UML file extension, is used to represent a data formation that has been organized in a fashion recognizable by Rational Rose, a software development tool created by IBM. The UML Data Object Model stores diagrams and other visual documentations of object-oriented programs written in different programming languages such as Visual C#.NET or Adobe ColdFusion MX, designed for the purpose of program analysis and design.

UML Data Object Models are typically represented through an extensible markup language, such as XML. This allows the program to be designed using graphical designs of objects, such as shapes and text elements which can be used to represent both the attributes and characteristics of a particular object in an organized system. Through the UML file format, the resulting diagram is then saved as a text file with the .UML file type. This allows for easier manipulation of the graphical elements, in comparison to coding the object-oriented design.

The UML file format is used by developers of object-oriented software applications for quickly and easily changing diagrams upon request. It also enables specific features, such as highlighting Object States in different shapes and colors according to their importance level. It eliminates many of the tedious tasks they must do in order to open, save and edit large graphs. Similar file formats include .XMI, .EMX, RXF, and .XSD.
