The .TEMP file extension is a temporary file created by the Windows operating system that has a variety of uses, depending on the application that generates it. It is used to store information in a non-persistent state, generally for short-term or intermediate purposes. Depending on the program, a TEMP file may be opened and saved as another file format, deleted upon completion of the task it was created for, or deleted after an allotted time period if the desired task is not completed. TEMP files often end with the “.tmp” suffix, but various other suffixes are sometimes seen in their creation; some of these include “.tem” and “.~tl”.
Uses of TEMP Files
Programs including Microsoft Word, InDesign, Photoshop, and Visual Studio use TEMP files for various purposes such as caching data while editing documents or creating images, or as placeholders for storing temporary configuration settings. Additionally, when programs such as Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader, and Foxit Reader open and close PDF documents, they automatically create a TEMP file to store references and partially-rendered content in order to speed up the loading process for future launches of the same PDF document.
Other File Extensions with Similar Uses
Several files with similar roles have been designed by software developers over the years: the .BAK, .OLD, and .GID files are also used to store temporary data. These files typically take on their purpose depending on the application that creates them. Generally speaking, a TEMP file is better suited for short-term tasks such as closing a program without losing previous work, while BAK files are used to store large amounts of data that can be retrieved in the event of a disaster or change request.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .TEMP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .TEMP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .TEMP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .TEMP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .TEMP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .TEMP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .TEMP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .TEMP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .TEMP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .TEMP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
