The SVD file extension is associated with Microsoft Word. These files are saved automatically and periodically by Microsoft Word while the user works on a Word document, as an act of precaution in case there is an error or power failure causing the application to crash. The document remains in this file format while it is open within Word, and if the program encounters an issue, it will revert back to the SVD file, meaning no data is lost. When the user closes the document, Word will convert the SVD into the more commonly used DOCX file format.
SVD files should not be confused with other Microsoft Word related document formats, such as DOCX, RTF, DOTX and DOTM. All of these formats contain different types of content that is not compatible with each other. A similar Autosave file by Microsoft PowerPoint is known as SLDX, while Autosave by Microsoft Excel is known as XLK. The majority of Autosave files cannot be opened normally since they are not in their complete form, meaning only part of the most recent file can be seen.
