The SQUASHFS file extension is a compressed, read-only file system created using XZ Utils, a free general-purpose data compression software for Unix-like operating systems. It is commonly used to reduce the size of disk images, and for embedding applications into embedded devices. The file system offers improved performance in the form of increased disk space efficiency, faster block I/O read access times, and reduced complexity in comparison to other file systems.
File Structure
A SQUASHFS file generally contains some basic information such as creation date, size, a directory structure, and the files stored within the filesystem.
