SPE file is the data file created and used by WinSpec software, an integrated imaging and spectroscopy software provided by Princeton Instruments. The WinSpec CCD Capture File stores data captured from Charge Coupled Device (CCD) cameras including spectroscopy and imaging data. For example, it may contain a series of photographic images, an art image, or scientific measurements. SPE files contain header information about the file as well as supporting photographical elements.
Structure
The SPE file has a binary structure, which contains header information such as date and time captured and the exposure duration followed by formatted camera data. This binary structure is split into 8-bit chunks with each chunk containing one pixel in a two-dimensional matrix of data bytes. It is often stored as multiple related files including the main file and a series of related ".avg" files. An SPE file can be easily recognized by its 3 letter .spe extension.
Similar File Types
SPE is associated with WinSpec CCD Capture File developed by Princeton Instruments. Other similar with SPE file formats are provided by Andor Technology, which use extensions such as .sif, .tif along with more than 30 other formats. Also different CCD cameras are available for astronomical observations such as SBIG ST-7, ST-8 and STL-6303 using specialized file formats like .fit, .st4, and .st5, respectively.
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SPE) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SPE extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SPE file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SPE extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SPE extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SPE file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SPE file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SPE file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SPE file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SPE file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
