SP (SPICE data file) is a file format used to store data for circuit simulations in SPICE, a well-known analog circuit analysis program developed by the University of California, Berkeley. SPICE has been widely used in academia and industry, for applications ranging from educational circuit simulations to industrial circuit design. The SP file format has superior read/write capabilities compared to other formats like.CLB,.NET, and.CIR.
The SP file extension is part of an input deck required by SPICE to simulate analog circuits. The other files in the input deck are usually text-based files (.MOD,.SUBCKT). SPICE will generate an output schematic and waveforms in a file with the.RAW extension after simulation. A series of SP files can also be created during simulation to store multiple scenarios within one input deck. Other related SPICE compatible data files are .MC (multiple connections), .SDT (schematic table), and .PRT (printer).
Overview of the SP File Extension
The SP (SPICE data file) is essentially a text-based file that contains the netlist and the simulation parameters used with SPICE. This includes the source statements, such as voltage and current sources, components used in the analog circuit, and the commands that define what type of analysis should be run. The syntax used to write in this file is specified in the User's Manual of SPICE. It also includes any other measurements or data that are necessary for analyzing or simulating the analog device. The actual values must be given as numeric values or symbols that correspond to values already defined in other parts of the SPICE input deck.
The ability to store circuit design information within a single file simplifies circuit design and modeling compared to other formats such as .DXF, .SCH, or KICAD, which need multiple files for each part of circuit design. Additionally, SP files can be used with different versions of SPICE without any changes, making this an ideal format for circuit simulations.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SP) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SP extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SP file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SP extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SP extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SP file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SP file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SP file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SP file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SP file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
