The SMV (VideoLink Mail Video File) file extension is used for a video file format developed for and used by VideoLink Mail products by Avid Technology. The VideoLink Mail video file allows software users to send and receive low resolution video files through email, using Avid's proprietary compression. This specially developed codec is designed to provide smaller file sizes while simultaneously preserving image quality. While SMV files are commonly used with VideoLink Mail software, files with this extension can also be found in transferring system folders for other Avid editing packages, such as Media Composer.
Technical Details
SMV files use a type of Motion JPEG encoding. This format allows the user to watch a low-resolution version of their video, while the system compresses it into a much smaller file size. For example, a 4 minute MPEG2 video can be compressed and pre-cached in an SMV file that is 750K or less. This can easily be sent via email without burdening users with large downloads.
