A SIG .SIG file is an electronic signature used to verify the authenticity of a document. It is created by a cryptographic algorithm, usually with a key-pair known only by the sender and the recipient. The sender signs the document with his/her private key, which generates the SIG file. When the recipient receives the signed document, they verify it with the sender's public key. The sender can also include a self-stamped timestamp to prove that the document was signed at a certain time.
The SIG file extension usually contains information about the signer's name, address, e-mail address, and other contact information. Other data such as a hash of the original document may also be included. Generally speaking, the more data included in the SIG file, the stronger the signature and therefore the greater assurance of authenticity.
Other Uses for SIG Files
Aside from verifying signatures, SIG files can also be used for other authentication purposes. For example, Apple FileVault 2 supports using a file with a SIG extension to authenticate user credentials for macOS devices. Web browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have also implemented support for SIG .SIG files. They can be used to authenticate digital downloads and applications to ensure that they are trustworthy before installation.
Similar File Formats
Other digital signature formats related to SIG files include .P7S, GPG, and .ASC. These files are created using different cryptographic algorithms and provide varying levels of security depending on their purpose.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .SIG) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .SIG extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .SIG file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .SIG extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .SIG extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .SIG file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .SIG file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .SIG file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .SIG file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .SIG file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
