Sun Bitmap Image | Sun Microsystems, Inc. | Graphic Files |
The .RF file extension is associated with the Sun OS Bitmap Format, a raster graphic format used on older versions Sun Microsystems’s UNIX operating system. This format was used to store black-and-white or color bitmap graphics. An.RF file is composed of three parts; a header, an icon bitmap, and an optional transparent mask.
Header
A typical.RF file starts with a 16-byte header which contains information on the image such as color resolution, width and height in pixels, the number of bits per pixel, and the byte ordering. After the header comes the actual pixel data, which is 65K to 262K bytes in size depending on the pixel format and image dimensions.
Pixel Data
Pixels are read left to right starting at the top row. Each row is padded out to the nearest multiple of 16 bits. RGB values are stored as 24 bits, while CMY and GRAY are stored with 8 bits/pixel. Bits from more than 8 bytes are stored in 32bit words with a 4 byte pad at the end of each row.
Transparent Mask
The optional transparent mask can be added to the image if it supports transparency or semi-transparency. This mask usually appears after the image data but can begin immediately after the header when included. The mask is given a 1bpp format where pixels that are intended to be transparent are marked with a '0.' The.RF file format is similar to other image formats such as .SUN, .RGB, .XBM, .XPM and .BMP, however, they vary slightly in parts of their layout, for example, headers. Due to its obsolete nature this format is not supported by modern software.
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .RF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .RF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .RF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .RF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .RF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .RF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .RF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .RF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .RF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .RF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
