Microsoft Windows 95/98 Backup Format | Microsoft | Backup Files |
The QIC file extension is associated with Microsoft Windows OS. More specifically, it is a Windows Backup file which is natively stored as a Compressed Copy to Tape format. It is used as a container for data that is to be stored on a tape or other media device using the Windows Backup utility. With the QIC files, multiple files and folders can be compressed into a single file and then written to tape.
Technical Details
The QIC file extension is closely related to other compression formats commonly used in Windows-based systems, such as ZIP, RAR, and 7z. Tapes that are stored in a QIC format are able to be read by both Windows and Mac OS X using specialized device drivers. They also have good compatibility when being restored from backup tapes created with earlier versions of the Windows OS. Furthermore, these files are generally smaller than other compression formats which allow for more efficient storage on tape devices.
Compatibility and Usability of QIC Files
The primary usage of the QIC file format is for archiving legacy data or media to tape utilising the Microsoft Windows built in system backup capabilities. However, any modern day operating system can open this format for limited data restoration. In addition, software utilities like IsoBuster and 7-Zip support the QIC format. Generally speaking, this compression format is rarely used any more because more efficient and better supported formats like ZIP, RAR, and 7z are now available on virtually all operating systems.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .QIC) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .QIC extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .QIC file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .QIC extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .QIC extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .QIC file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .QIC file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .QIC file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .QIC file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .QIC file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
