PWD (or PWD) is a file extension associated with WordPerfect Writer documents. PWD files are document files created and used by Corel’s WordPerfect Office, a word processor, productivity suite formerly owned by the company Borland. It was originally released for DOS in 1983 and later ported to Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, and various other platforms.
PWD files contain formatted text, tables, images, formulas and other objects. The format is almost identical to WordPerfect's other document formats such as WPD and WPS. Similar file extensions also include DOC, DOCX, and RTF. PWD documents can be opened with WordPerfect Office, Apache OpenOffice, Microsoft Office, and several other word processors.
Structure of PWD Files
The structure of a PWD file is divided into four levels: data blocks, subblocks, records, and fields. Blocks are a collection of data that is organized according to its purpose and function. For example, data blocks may store page properties, formatting settings and text. Subblocks are a collection of related records. Records are further divided into fields. Different types of records contain different fields for specific types of text or elements.
PWD File Compression
While data contained within a PWD file is compressed to reduce the size of the file on disk, the exact format used for this compression is proprietary to Corel and not publicly documented. Older versions of WordPerfect used its own proprietary compression algorithm in order to reduce the size of the file on disk. On these versions of WordPerfect compressing a document decreased its file size by roughly 70%. On more modern versions of WordPerfect Corel switched from its own custom compression algorithm to a widely adopted industry standard algorithm for data compression.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PWD) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PWD extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PWD file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PWD extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PWD extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PWD file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PWD file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PWD file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PWD file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PWD file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
