File extension .PVR
|Sega Dreamcast VR Texture Format
|Raster Image Files
The PVR file extension is a type of texture file used by various computer graphics systems. It was developed by Imagination Technologies, the same company behind the POWERVR series of integrated graphics processors used in mobile phones and other handheld devices. The PVR file format is a "bucket" file format that allows texture data to be stored in an efficient manner. It is optimized for fast loading and rendering of textures on the PowerVR graphics processors.
A PVR file stores uncompressed data in multiple sections inside the file. It can store up to four image data planes (each with separate alpha values, if applicable,) along with mipmaps and meta-data. This allows the image to be scaled down while still retaining optimal quality for faster rendering speeds. It also supports various compression options such as DXT, PVRTC, and ETC2/EAC that further improve loading and rendering speeds without affecting image quality.
Similar File Extensions
Other related image formats similar to the PVR file format are the .DDS, .PB, .BMP, and .TGA file extensions. These formats are supported by many graphic-related software applications such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Affinity Photo, GIMP, IrfanView, and many others.
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PVR) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PVR extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PVR file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PVR extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PVR extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PVR file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PVR file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PVR file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PVR file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PVR file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
