Unreal Engine Character Model Mesh Format | Epic Games | 3D Image Files |
The PSK extension is a .PSK file, which are skeleton meshes created and stored in the proprietary formats used by Epic Games, most notably UnrealEngine3.
PSK files contain skeletal animation data that is used by the engine to simulate 3D objects on a computer. They are composed of skeletal data points including vertices, materials, textures, normals, weightings, bones and joints. The data points represent all aspects of a 3D model such as movement of the skeleton for animations, 3D geometry used for rendering and surfaces for physically based renderings.
Similar Formats
Similar file extensions include .PSA, .DMX and .FBX, with each format allowing a user to export or import virtual models in other 3D applications.
Uses in Games Development
The use of the PSK format has been commonplace in 3D games development for many years. It is used widely in both indie and commercial products for creating models which can be manipulated at runtime - such as enemies and items that can be interacted with inside a game. It is also widely accepted by other gaming engines such as Unity and CryEngine.
Open File Format
In addition to being supported by Unreal Engine 3, PSK files are often used interchangeably with other open formats such as FBX meaning they can be imported across many applications including Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max. Furthermore, it benefits from its close association with the Unreal Engine so new features can be quickly incorporated into the pipeline.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for MAC system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PSK) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PSK extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PSK file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PSK extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PSK extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PSK file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PSK file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PSK file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PSK file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PSK file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
