Polygon Format | Stanford University | 3D Image Files |
The .PLY file extension is an ASCII encoded Polygon Model File used primarily for storing mathematical models rendered in a 3D space. It is most often used in conjunction with 3D Studio Max, Maya and other 3D rendering software. The PLY format is open source and maintained by the Computer Graphics Laboratory at Stanford University.
Developed with a focus on data preservation and human-readability, the PLY format allows the user to easily transfer 3D objects between third-party software applications. It is also useful in creating digital models for games, as it stores both color and texture information about each object, as well as allowing for transparency, depth of field and textures, among other features. Additionally, the file format has proven especially useful for making binary versions of common log formats like STL and Multi-Material formats.
File Structure
A PLY file contains header information followed by a listing of all the elements used to describe a 3D object. These elements can include vertex coordinates, normal vectors, texture coordinates, and more. It also includes a comment section at the beginning of the file, where any specific information related to the file can be added. When read in plain text, the PLY file is straightforward to interpret as there are no hidden or obfuscated elements.
Similar File Extensions
The PLY file is similar to other 3D model file extensions such as .OBJ, .FBX, .DXF, and .3DS, all of which are commonly used for 3D modeling projects.
Programs for WINDOWS system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PLY) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PLY extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PLY file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PLY extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PLY extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PLY file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PLY file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PLY file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PLY file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PLY file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
