PCAP Next Generation Dump Format | N/A | Data Files |
The PCAPNG ( .pcapng) format is the next-generation packet capture file format, developed and maintained by the Libpcap/WinPcap project. This enhanced format allows for more information to be stored in a single file, and supports a variety of different record types and data blocks. It is designed to extend the capabilities of the original PCAP ( .pcap) file format and provide compatibility with existing applications. As a result, the PCAPNG format is preferred when capturing and exchanging network traffic.
File Format
The PCAPNG file is the default output from applications that use the Libpcap library, such as Wireshark, a network protocol analyzer. The file is composed of a sequence of blocks; each block holds data or metadata of different types. A common type of block is an Enhanced Packet Block (EPB), which stores data from an individual packet that went through the network interface card (NIC). EPB blocks include metadata fields such as packet timestamp, header size, packet size, error status, and checksum validity. Additional types of blocks are available to store information regarding name resolution requests, interface descriptions, statistics, comments, errors, etc. No matter their type, all blocks start with a common block header.
Supported Software
Wireshark, Tshark, and other applications built with the Libpcap library are capable of recognizing and reading PCAPNG packets. Additionally, several other packet capture tools also offer support for the format. These include NetworkMiner, a network forensics tool; ans1decoder, an ASN1 decoder; NetWitness Investigator, a network security monitoring tool; and Capsa Network Analyzer. There are other file formats that can be used to transfer or store packet capture information, such as PCAP ( .pcap) files, Packet Logger ( pklg) files, or Extensible Markup Language Trace ( .xml) files.
Programs for MAC system
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PCAPNG) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PCAPNG extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PCAPNG file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PCAPNG extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PCAPNG extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PCAPNG file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PCAPNG file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PCAPNG file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PCAPNG file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PCAPNG file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
