The PAF (Personal Ancestral File) file extension is a widely used data format related to genealogy and family history. Developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the PAF conversion data format is based on the GEDCOM standard, and is symbolized by the .PAF file extension. This format is specialized for the storage and export of multi-generational family trees, lineage records and related genealogical data.
Technical Details
PAF is really a database or text file extension and is based off of GEDCOM, which stands for “Genealogical Data Communication”. PAF files contain vital information about the ancestry and family members, including such data points as: full name, gender, birth/death dates/places, surnames, family relationships, notes, multimedia items, source citations and so on. PAF conversions allow for various genealogy programs to share and communicate data with one another. Other file extensions similar to PAF are GED, GKP, FTM and FTW.
Advantages of PAF Conversion
PAF files offers numerous advantages over other genealogy formats. Some of the advantages are that you can manage all of your family tree data automatically using specialized software tools to store and review all of your gathered information quickly and easily. Using the archived PAF data makes it simpler to view past ancestries in order to validate newly created family trees. The PAF versions from 2005 and later have improved features to help users during the uploading process from other database sources.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .PAF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .PAF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .PAF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .PAF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .PAF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .PAF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .PAF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .PAF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .PAF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .PAF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
