The .NLS file extension is a Microsoft National Language Support File and it is commonly associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. An NLS file stores national language support data used by different applications in order to provide language-specific formats for sorting, dates, times, currency etc. The NLS files are named similarly to the language codes used for local installation in Windows. These may include ‘CD0A.NLS’ for Czech, ‘FR0A.NLS’ for French and so on.

The purpose of an NLS file is to translate text and other parts of a user interface such as date-time format, sorting order, decimal and thousands separation characters from one language to another. It provides support and formatting information for all languages covered under the Windows International feature set. The content of an NLS file includes code pages, font tables, icon resources and IME (Input Method Editor) support for non-English languages.
