The NIF (Gamebryo Model File) file extension is a proprietary 3D model format used by NetImmerse and Gamebryo, 3D modeling software applications developed for Windows-based platforms. The NIF (.nif) files serve as placeholder container files for 3D object data, typically made up of vertex data, texture and animation data, 3D mesh structure data, or 2D image layer data. The NIF files also include information about object color, movement path or animation loop, shadows, LOD library information, as well as bones and skeleton linkage data if relevant.
Similar File Extensions
NIF files are closely related to other commonly used 3D model file formats, such as .3DS, .X, .KFM, .B3D, .ASE or .OBJ files. Generally these files are used to describe 3D models made up of bulk faces and vertices; the geometry of the shapes present in a 3D scene, as opposed to animation-specific motion or skeletal guidance, which are stored in file formats like .BVH, .DM2, .SMD, .IGES or .DXF.
Application Support
NIF files are compatible with many Windows-based software applications that can store or manipulate 3D objects, including but not limited to Autodesk MAYA, Blender, Unreal Development Kit, and commercial gaming applications such as the popular series from Bethesda Softworks like Oblivion, and the MMORPG's such as Elder Scrolls Online. Those wishing to view and edit NIF files on a Mac system can still do so using third-party applications such as the open-source modelers like Blender, and paid options such as Autodesk MAYA.
Programs for WINDOWS system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .NIF) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .NIF extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .NIF file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .NIF extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .NIF extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .NIF file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .NIF file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .NIF file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .NIF file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .NIF file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
