The NDS file extension is the file format used by Nintendo DS game ROMs. The Nintendo DS is a popular handheld gaming system released in 2004 that combined two liquid crystal displays (LCD) with a touchpad for interface between players and the game. The NDS file extension is the same as the Nintendo DS's predecessor, the Gameboy Advance, using similar file formats, but with higher resolution graphics.
File Format
NDS file format is composed of several component parts. There are header files which contain information about the game; such as a license to play it, copyright information, game title and version etc. Then there are program data files which contain the code of the actual game program. Lastly, there are media data files which contain game graphics, audio, maps etc. The overall structure of the files is similar to the GBA, GBX, GBC, and BIN files.
Features
The NDS file format offers several benefits from lower cost development to faster development cycle times. Its programming-friendly environment makes it easy for developers to make games that utilize the full potential of the Nintendo DS. It also has libraries which allow developers to create powerful features such as 3D effects, sound synthesis and seamless loading of video and audio.
Compatibility
The NDS format works natively with Nintendo DS hardware and software. However, a number of third party emulators are available on various platforms that can support NDS games and files. Among these include DeSmuME for Windows, iOS, Android and Mac OS X; No$gba for Windows and iDeaS for Linux.
Programs for LINUX system
After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .NDS) with the new application. If this does not happen, we can help the system a bit by selecting the software for it, which it should always use to open files with the .NDS extension.
When choosing the software we can select the system to use this software every time.
Remember!
Using it for the first time it is good to check whether the .NDS file opened in the application can be read by us and opens in a way that allows us to use it. If everything is in order, select this option the next time you open a file with the .NDS extension. However, if the file has not opened correctly, we have to look for a different software, with which we can open files with the .NDS extension. Select a different software from our list and install it on your computer. After the software is installed, repeat inspection openings of a .NDS file. Sometimes you have to repeat the operation several times.
Other instructions
If none of the programs listed by us to work with the .NDS file has not meet your expectations, you can try searching other websites. But remember to avoid downloading programs "that can open any file". These applications not only have very limited functionality, but may also expose you to expense tens of dollars when purchasing a license.
In the vast majority of cases you will find the program dedicated to support the .NDS file, or any other file format. In addition, there is a chance that it will be a free program, and its functionality (concerning the .NDS file) will be extended to the maximum.
It is also good to check
- if the .NDS file has no errors
- or if it has been copied (or downloaded by the browser) thoroughly
