The NCX (Navigation Control XML File) file extension is an electronic publication, or EPUB, XML document defining the navigation structure of a reading system. It goes without saying that a database really needs structure - after all, it is number of interrelated files that contain components of a flattened document system.
The NCX file extension is part of the EPUB specification and is used to describe hierarchical documents with metadata. It defines how the table of contents (TOCs) of electronic publications must be structured and provides an intuitive way for navigation inside the linked documents. An EPUB TOC is organized with an NCX file which contains a hierarchical list of references pointing to different documents within the EPUB package. Other related file extensions include ZIP, OPF, HTML, and CSS.
How the NCX File Extension Works?
The NCX (Navigation Control XML File) file extension stores hierarchical navigation instructions that specify how the EPUB reader should display and navigate through its linked documents. This hierarchy of linked documents includes titles and subsections, and corresponds to the viewer’s headings in the TOC panel. In other words, when an EPUB document is opened in a reader, its TOC is populated from the NCX file.
NCX Syntax & Structure
The NCX(Navigation Control XML File) file extension has its own syntax and structure defined by the Open Publication Structures (OPS) specification. It consists of multiple markup elements such as head, docTitle, navMap, navPoint, and docAuthor.
The "head" markup element, for example, must be included in an .ncx, while its child elements are entirely optional. Along with root element, it specifies various metadata fields such as page orientation and language direction.

After installing the required software, the operating system will usually automatically associate an unknown file type (in this case .NCX) with the new application.
